Alternative Therapy for Sleep Apnea

About one in five people with depression also suffer from a sleep related breathing disorder, most often obstructive sleep apnea. Researchers have long debated which has come first the sleep apnea or the depression. But they do agree that it's treating the sleep apnea that does help the depression and you can read all about our alternative therapy for sleep apnea.

Lifestyle changes can recover obstructive sleep apnea particularly in milder cases. Nevertheless these do necessitate a great deal of inspiration and energy, something that may be hard to muster when you are tired and depressed.

Weight loss can improve the technicalities of inhalation. Sleeping on one side instead of your back can take the pressure off air passages. And since sedatives and alcohol and relaxants for the muscles can worsen an original physical trouble it's best to stay away from these.

One of the most common treatments for sleep apnea is continuous positive airway pressure or CPAP which is a breathing device used while sleeping. Many people complain it is very uncomfortable and just adds to their insomnia.

Positive airway pressure (PAP) is for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea, most experts recommend PAP, a device which supplies pressurized air through a mask that goes over the nose. The air force lessons the effect the inclination for the airway to collapse when the muscle relaxes during slumber. This allows the individual to breathe frequently and sleep in general without interference.

There is a dental device which fits in the mouth to change the position of the tongue and lower jaw, prying the airway open and is comparatively safe to use. These devices have a 50 to 70 percent achievement rate for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. They have shown to be less helpful for severe sleep apnea patients.

Medications are another alternative therapy for sleep apnea. They are used chiefly in combination with one of the devices or other treatments. Two types of antidepressants –selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and tricyclics - may somewhat recover airway muscle tone and are cooperative for a minute portion of people with mild obstructive sleep apnea.

Another medication, approved in 2004, modafinil is used to treat afternoon drowsiness that sometimes happens in people who use the PAP device successfully. Modafinil can help people with obstructive sleep apnea that have difficulty staying awake and alert throughout the day, take into account that the drug does not speak to the source of the sleep apnea. The drug is a helpful addition to other treatments but is not a stand-alone treatment. There is no cure for sleep apnea even the surgery is not guaranteed to cure sleep apnea but at least alternative therapy for sleep apnea does provide some relief.
