Sleep Paralysis Treatment

To treat sleep paralysis, one must first understand what it is. Sleep paralysis is the inability to complete voluntary actions either when waking up or at the onset of sleep.

 

This condition is called predormital or hypnogogic form – when not being able to move when sleep onset. And called postdormtal or hynopompic form when trying to awaken.

Sleep paralysis is also called familial sleep paralysis, hynogogic or hypnopompic paralysis, postdormtal or predormital paralysis or isolated sleep paralysis. Some of the symptoms include brief episodes of complete or partial muscle skeletal paralysis, the inability to move ones limbs or torso during falling asleep or the waking up process and sometimes associated with dream-like or hallucination state of mind.

One thing an individual could do to help themselves is to recognize their symptoms because knowing what to expect will make it a lot less scary and allow you to deal with the ‘terror’ that sometimes accompanies the sleep paralysis better. Also, know what could be triggering the onset of the sleep paralysis could help an individual avoid it sometimes. It is often the position that a person falls asleep in that can trigger an episode of sleep paralysis, stress, their environment or their emotional state of mind before falling asleep.

Sleep paralysis is very frightful for those it is happening to but it is not harmful in any way. The treatment is typically a medication called Sodium oxybate (xyrem) which could cure the most severe cases. Often sleep paralysis does not happen every night or to the same person over and over again.
