Sleep Apnea Pillows and How They Can Help

Many more people are being diagnosed with sleep apnea these days due to the stress of everyday life and the fact that more and more people are over weight, both major

contributors to this wide spread condition. Sleep apnea is a disorder in which an individual stops breathing several times during their sleep cycle.

A doctor, usually after a sleep study, will recommend a CPAP machine to help the person sleep better and keep from stopping their breathing during the night. Some people believe the CPAP machines are a wonderful invention while others have a hard time because they are a little claustrophobic and can't get used to the air rushing in their nose. There seems to me no middle ground with these machines, either people love them or hate them, however they have been prove to work well on all cases of sleep apnea.

Since a person using a CPAP machine can not sleep on their stomach, this pushes the mask to the side of their face, them must either sleep flat on their back or on their left or right side, whichever is more comfortable for them. Some companies have come up with the sleep apnea pillows to allow for better sleeping with the mask that is part of the CPAP machine.

One thing that might help a CPAP machine user is the new sleep apnea pillow. These pillows are designed specifically to help a person wearing the mask be more comfortable and get a better nights sleep without tossing and turning or having to readjust their machine.

Many of the sleep apnea pillows are contoured, with various groves and indentations for the mask, a person's ear, their forehead and chin in order to keep them still and not allow them to move about which sometimes causes the mask to dislodge from the nose and mouth.

Most of these pillows have different sections cut out of them, one for the shoulder, and another for the ear and then there are support areas that are raised rather then indented. The raised areas are usually for the head and the forehead so that the face and head do not fall forward causing the facemask to fall off and wake the patient up with the sound of the air flowing or their own breathing problems.

These pillows are made to reduce pressure on ones face and the mask in addition to stopping leakage of air from the mask and the all important mask discomfort. Mask discomfort is the number one complaint people have when using the CPAP machine.

There is no prescription needed for a sleep apnea pillow and they can be found online or in the same medical supply stores that carry the CPAP machines. There are several different style and brand names to choose from. The main thing they all have in common is the deep 'well' that allows room for the mask on either side of the pillow so that a person could comfortably sleep on their left or right side.

Sleep apnea pillows are a last resort for apnea sufferers. There are a number of sleep apnea natural remedies which should also be considered if you are not comfortable with having to wear an oxygen mask at night.
