Sleep Apnea Mouth Guard and How They Can Help
Many of the sleep apnea remedies involve the CPAP machine and several people do not tolerate it well. They can become claustrophobic and do not like the air rushing up their
nose and some people just won't use it so it does them no good. One alternative for sleep apnea is the sleep apnea mouth guard.
A dentist is usually the person who an individual would see for a fitting on a sleep apnea mouth guard. Some of these mouth guards resemble a football player's mouth guard and cover both the top and the bottom teeth with a clear, thin piece of plastic. There are others that also come with a tongue guard which is a small 'pouch' type plastic piece that holds the tongue forward and out of the mouth. This is so the air passing through and over the back of the tongue will do so without making so much noise – snoring is the noise people hear.

If a person is having trouble sleeping, falling asleep or staying asleep, then their doctor will likely order a sleep study to find out if they have a condition known as sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a disorder in which an individual stops breathing several times during their sleep cycle. Some people who are overweight or suffer from too much stress could suffer from sleep apnea however it is a true medical condition and will not go away on its own.
Some of the sleep apnea mouth guards are mandibular advancement devices which will bring the jaw forward to allow the air to pass over the back of the throat and tongue more evenly while a person is trying to sleep. These devices have a deep bite zone where as a sports guard does not.
First, a sports guard is made of harder plastic to help with shock absorbency when a player gets hit in the mouth. The sleep apnea guard is a softer plastic and helps to bring the jaw forward; this is not what the sports guard does. A sports guard simply sits on player's teeth where as a sleep apnea mouth guard gently pulls a jaw to the front of a mouth helping to adjust the breathing of the person.
Some of the mouth guards for sleep apnea also come with a chin strap which is a soft cloth that wraps around a person's head from under their chin to the top of their head. This will keep their mouth closed and prevent excess air from getting down in the throat area and making a person snore or loose their breath.
There are small packages that are sold over the counter that an individual could boil the guard in water to mold themselves to make a sleep apnea mouth guard, however, it is best to have a dentist properly custom fit a sleep apnea mouth guard for a stronger, longer lasting fit. Unless a person looses a lot of weight or gains a lot, they will not have to have an adjustment of their sleep apnea mouth guard for a long time, perhaps a replacement after a couple years of use.
Sleep apnea mouthguards are a last resort for apnea sufferers. There are a number of sleep apnea natural remedies which should also be considered if you are not comfortable with having to wear an oxygen mask at night.
