Sleep Apnea Breathing Machine - CPAP, VPAP, APAP

CPAP, VPAP and APAP are the 3 general types of sleep apnea breathing machines that aids positive airway pressure. Positive Airway Pressure or PAP as commonly known is

described as "a method of respiratory ventilation used primarily in the treatment of sleep apnea for which it was first developed. The device is also described as "a breathing machine that pumps a st r eam of controlled air through a mask which is worn over the nose & mouth. The additional pressure holds open the relaxed muscles, just as the air in a balloon inflates it ."

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is oftentimes called "nasal CPAP". People who suffer from mixed and obstructive sleep apnea prefers this type of treatment. The CPAP can be compared to an oxygen mask because of the straps that secures it in place. It is typically a small air blower device attached to a hose that is connected to a nose mask . This device is worn while a person sleeps throughout the night. The CPAP blows air into the patient's nose to keep the airway clear and open to maintain the steady flow of airway pressure. The doctor is the one who determines the amount of pressure the machine will generate, depending entirely on an overnight test or titration on the patient.

The Variable Positive Airway Pressure (VPAP) or Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure differs slightly from CPAP. While CPAP delivers a steady stream of pressure depending on the amount of pressure determined by the doctor, VPAP has the capacity to know and provide the amount of air the patient needs at various periods at night. The machine relies on the inspiration and expiration breathing pattern of the patient. During breathing inspiration, a higher level of pressure is needed to prevent snoring, apneas or hypopneas. On the other hand, during expiration the patient then needs a lower amount of pressure. It is also important to say that because of these qualities of VPAP, these machines are more expensive compared to CPAP and insurance companies do not cover the costs in its policies.

Automatic Positive Airway Pressure (APAP) is the most high-end type of positive airway pressure device. It combines pressure and computer sensors in monitoring the breathing pattern of the patient during his or her sleep and how much air pressure the patient actually needs. The machine adjusts the pressure depending on how the patient is breathing . The pressure is increased when the person struggles to breath e and needs a pump of oxygen but decreases when the pressure is not really needed. Currently APAP is still in the experimental stages although it's already approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA ) but like VPAP, it is also not covered by a lot of insurance companies in their policies.

Sleep apnea breathing machines are a last resort for apnea sufferers. There are a number of sleep apnea natural remedies which should also be considered if you are not comfortable with having to wear an oxygen mask at night.
