What are the Symptoms of Insomnia?

Many people ask 'what are symptoms of insomnia?' and there is a simple answer to this question, however sometimes the symptoms can mask something different or more serious, therefore, it is best to check with your doctor if you begin to show any of these signs.

There are several symptoms of insomnia and they vary from person to person but the main concern is a continued lack of sleep, mainly staying asleep; although, others may have a difficult time falling asleep either at the onset or after waking.

Some people feel sleepy during the day, even though they may think they have gotten several hours of sleep. What has happened is that they have not gotten a good night sleep, they have had a restless night of sleep and this could be a symptom of insomnia.

People who are worried about something like their job, trouble with a spouse, financial difficulties or other major stresses can have trouble sleeping for long periods of time this could lead to insomnia. A restless mind, one that simply can not be 'turned off' could be a sign of insomnia. If something is troubling you, try to work it out so you will get some much needed sleep. Seek counseling if that will help the stress and allow you to sleep better. Some people may develop terrible headaches from getting too little sleep and having too much stress in their lives.

If a person is resistant to going to bed because they know they will have a difficult time falling asleep or staying asleep, so they simply stay awake and do other things like read or watch television or even clean the house, this is a symptom of insomnia.

If you suddenly change your schedule, this could cause a bout with insomnia but should go away once your body is used to the new schedule, even if it does not interfere with your sleep, it could be more demanding on your body or your mind and therefore interrupt your natural sleep pattern.

There are very few people in the world who need less than five hours of sleep a night, and even five hours a night is less than the doctor recommended minimum amount of sleep to maintain a healthy life. Doctors suggest adults should be getting between 7 and 9 hours of good sleep per night. This means going to bed at the same time every night and waking up at the same time every morning.
