Home Remedies for Insomnia

It is estimated that over 58 percent of American’s suffer from insomnia at least one or

more nights a week on a regular basis. This is a lot of people and before reaching for one of the over-the-counter medications or asking your physician for a prescription drug, try a few simple home remedies for insomnia and see if they will work for you.

Begin by getting some sunlight. Natural sunlight is important for our bodies and for our sleep patterns. Try for at least 30 minutes each day. While out in the sunlight, start an exercise program, walking is a good one. Exercise is good for a body and people who are healthy typically sleep better, but be sure to finish whatever exercise you choose at least three to four hours before you plan on going to bed.

Other home remedies for insomnia are simple little tricks to keep your mind and body healthy and soon you will be sleeping through the night in no time at all.
One thing many people neglect is their bedroom. It needs to become a sanctuary. It should be clutter-free and clean for helping make it conducive to sleep. Darkness signals the body it is time to sleep and if there is light streaming in the window, this will keep you from reaching the deep sleep that helps a body repair and replenish itself for the next day. Investing in heavy drapery, ‘black-out curtains’ or a sleep mask will help tremendously.

Turn the alarm clock away from you, don’t watch the clock. Only use the bed for sleep and sex, no reading, working or watching television in bed. If you can’t sleep after 10 to 15 minutes, get up and go in another room and read or watch television quietly until you feel really sleepy and then go back to bed to try again.

Prepare your mind for the evening. About an hour or two before you are going to bed, sit and write down all your worries and things that are troubling you, then put the notebook away, both physically and mentally. Say you will worry about it tomorrow and then stick to it – don’t think about it again.

Avoid alcohol and caffeine within 4 or 5 hours of bedtime. Some home remedies for insomnia recommend an old wives favorite: a hot cup of calamine tea or a warm glass of milk.

Of course there are lots of other faster acting insomnia remedies which have been proven to work for 1,000's of people worldwide. And we have put together some of the better known and effective sleep programs below.
