How To Combat Alcohol Insomnia

The term alcohol insomnia refers to a person who tries to combat their insomnia by drinking alcohol. While at first a nice alcoholic beverage may put you into a relaxed state and you could get about two or three good hours of sleep, the rest of the time you will ether be wide awake or tossing and turning with vivid, often scary, traumatic dreams which will tire a person out and not allow them to get the good sleep they need.

Alcohol has a drying agent in it and will dehydrate a person's body causing them to wake from thirst and their body to begin craving moisture and the hydration it needs to function properly while it repairs itself, something the body does while we sleep.

In order to get a good night sleep, an individual should stop drinking alcohol about 4 or 6 hours before they plan on going to bed. They should switch to water. If alcohol consumption is impairing a person's daily activity, it is time to think about giving it up completely. If drinking is affecting your ability to sleep as well, it is time to give it up.

Trying to quit drinking is often times difficult and most people need the help of therapy groups or counselors to see them through the hard time but it is worth it to be free from something that could be taking over their livesHelp With Trouble Sleeping and ruining it at the same time.

A doctor may prescribe sleeping pills to help you fall asleep and stay asleep but it is very important you are honest and upfront with your doctor and tell him or her that you also drink alcohol. Sleeping pills and alcohol do not mix, they both act as a depressant and are meant to slow your breathing and relax your body and this could happen so much so that your body may not be able to handle it and something bad like a coma or worse could happen. Do not mix sleeping pills with alcohol.

There are other drinks that seem to help many people fall asleep, some like warm milk, and others feel that chamomile or fennel teas help them fall asleep. Teas and milk help to calm the central nervous system much in the same way alcohol does but without the alcohol insomnia. It may take a week or two to get used to the new beverage but will be worth it to get a good night sleep in the end.

These are just a few natural treatments for insomnia to try before seeking medical help or medications.
